Former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) says President Trump should “absolutely” release his tax returns rather than face continued scrutiny over their contents.
“I’m a Trump supporter, [but] he should release his taxes,” he said Monday on MSNBC. “I do think this issue will come back and bite him in the butt.”
Walsh added Trump and other Republicans are missing a legitimate uprising of liberal outrage against their party.
“If Donald TrumpDonald TrumpEx-GOP rep: Trump ‘should release his taxes’ 8 ways to reform the Interior Department Trump calls to congratulate Turkish leader on referendum: report MORE and the Republicans continue to push this narrative that this protest movement on the left isn’t real, it’s going to overtake them,” he said. “They’re going to lose next year.”
“That’s exactly what the Democrats said six years ago about the Tea Party movement and they were wrong.”
White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday that Trump’s 2016 tax returns are under audit and will not be released.
“We are under the same audit that existed, so nothing has changed,” he said during his daily press briefing.
“The president is under audit, it’s a routine one, it continues, and I think the American public knows very clearly where [Trump] stands,” Spicer added. “This is something he made very clear during the election cycle.”
Thousands of people turned out last Saturday at rallies nationwide demanding that Trump release his tax returns.
Trump mocked the demonstrations Sunday, declaring “the election is over” and wondering on Twitter who “paid for” the events across the country.
The president broke with decades of precedent last year by refusing to release his tax returns, claiming they were under an IRS audit.
The IRS has since said that nothing prevents an individual from publicly releasing their tax information while it is being audited.
